Richmond, VA — The 2024 Freedom Classic Festival - home to one of the nation’s biggest HBCU rivalries between Virginia Union University (VUU) and Virginia State University (VSU) – returns Saturday, January 20th to VSU’s Multi-Purpose Center. Purchase tickets at www.freedomclassicfestival.com.
Doors open at 2:00 pm Saturday for the double-header matchup. The women’s teams go head-to-head on the hardwood at 3:00 pm, followed by the men’s teams at 6:00 pm. VSU’s Multi-Purpose Center is located at 20809 2nd Avenue in Petersburg.
HBCUs hold some of the longest-running sports and academic rivalries in history. VSU and VUU prove no different. With only about 25 miles between them, these two powerhouse institutions have held on to a sports rivalry spanning decades. As the only two HBCUs in this area, VUU and VSU’s school pride runs deep.
The Freedom Classic first began its tradition in Richmond, Virginia, on January 14th, 1996. Twenty-eight years later, this event has evolved into a community staple, connecting thousands of alumni, students, fans, and corporations as we commemorate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Civil Rights Movement.
